April 2010 WBM 100 review of the Eldridge Estate Pinot Noir 2008

There is refreshing poise to the cherry blossom and red cherry flavours on parade here.

Fine grained chocolatey French oak plays a supporting role amid fine, silky tannins

and seamless persistence. An impressive vintage for Eldridge.

A serious Aussie Chardonnay: Eldridge Estate

Australian Chardonnay doesn’t have a great image these days. But, as the Landmark Tutorial last year showed, it’s a serious category. Here’s a new wine to me, which I really rate. It’s from Eldridge Estate in the Morning Peninsula.

Eldridge Estate Chardonnay 2008 Mornington Peninsula, Australia
14% alcohol. Complex, powerful and intense with rich but balanced flavours of nuts, fig, peach and pear, as well as subtle toasty notes. Fruit dominated with real refinement and complexity. Wish it was a bit cheaper, but it’s worth it. 94/100 (UK retail £30, available at www.auswineonline.co.uk)

2008 Gamay review

A great review of the  2008 Gamay from the September edition of Delicious magazine - take a peek at our scanned copy.

Here's a snippet:

Gamay is a minor grape variety in Australia, but a clutch of producers are trying their hand. Some of the best come from Beaujolais aficionados David and Wendy Lloyd at Eldridge Estate on the Mornington Peninsula. Other pockets of gamay are found here and there, mostly in Victoria. There should be more of it, as its bright, breezy, gulpable wine is perfect for our warm climate and outdoorsy lifestyle. As spring and summer arrive, gamay - whether the local drop or French Beaujolais - should be on every drinker's shopping list.

Eldridge Estate Gamay 2008 - $35

Is this Australia's best gamay? The Mornington Peninsula seems to suit the variety. This '08 ideally needs a few more months in the bottle to mellow further. It has juicy plum and red berry aromas with a whisper of herb. The palate is clean, intense and tangy, with great personality.

Euroa Creeks...

2006 Euroa Creeks Reserve Shiraz   $55

This wine was awarded third prize in the competitive 2008 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Supplies are very limited. To read more about the Euroa Creeks range, visit the website: euroacreeks.com

2006 Euroa Creeks Early Harvest Shiraz   $28

This wine is made from a small 7 acre vineyard in Euroa that was managed under the guidance of David Lloyd of Eldridge Estate who also supervised the harvest, crushed the grapes in the field before bringing the mix of skin and juice back to Eldridge Estate for fermentation and subsequent barrel aging of the wine. The wine contains 1% Viognier grown by Hugh and Isabelle Robinson at Moorooduc on the Mornington Peninsula that adds a hint of apricot flavour.

Huon Hooke gave this wine 94 points and says
"It's elegant with cherry, plum and subtle mint aromas.
Fresh, bright, beautifully balanced with a lingering finish.
Drink now, or cellar for up to 10 years."
Sydney Morning Herald Good Living, Nov 20, 2007.

Melb Age Jan 2007

Ralph Kyte-Powell reviewed our 2005 Single Clone Chardonnay in The Age's Uncorked feature.

Eldridge Estate is one of the Mornington Peninsula's most dynamic makers of chardonnay and pinot noir. This clonally selected chardonnay is slightly wild and very complex, with earth, mineral, cashew, citrus and ginger spice characters, a smooth, smoky palate of subtlety and finesse, and a long dry finish.
Ageing? Drink over two years.
